How sleep debt affects dreaming
Your brain cycles through 4–5 sleep stages each night. REM sleep — the stage where vivid dreaming occurs — is concentrated in the last 2 hours of an 8-hour night. When you cut your sleep short, REM is the first thing sacrificed.
This is why people with chronic sleep debt often say "I don't dream anymore." They do — they just never reach the deep REM stages where memorable dreams form. Paying back sleep debt gradually (adding 30–60 minutes per night) is the most effective way to restore vivid dreaming.
